Some brands stand the test of time because they never tried to escape it. Instead, they chose to listen to it, respect it and turn it into identity. Antiga Barbearia de Bairro is one such rarity. Approaching its 16th anniversary, the Portuguese brand remains faithful to what gave it life: a love for old barbershops, traditional Portuguese neighbourhoods and a certain unhurried masculine ritual.

Founded in May 2010 by Luís Pereira, the brand was born from a clear and openly acknowledged passion. “From the very first day we have maintained our fondness for old barbershops and typical Portuguese neighbourhoods,” explains the founder. Not as an exercise in nostalgia, but as a way of preserving a culture in which male grooming is also a social gesture, almost a communal one.

Places where memory acquires a scent

Chiado, Príncipe Real, Ribeira do Porto. More than names on a map, these neighbourhoods are emotional territories. At Antiga Barbearia de Bairro, they also serve as the starting point for fragrances that seek to capture something invisible yet profoundly human: memory.

“Smell captures much of the experience of places,” Luís Pereira points out. Each fragrance is born from this dialogue between history, environment and sensation. Not only in the scent itself, but also in the packaging, conceived as an extension of that narrative. Wearing one of the brand’s fragrances is, in a way, inhabiting a place, even if only for a moment.

Across generations, the ritual endures

March brings with it Father’s Day, a date rarely associated with grand gestures, but one that lives on enduring symbols. Fragrance is one of them. A scent that lingers, that is recognised, that crosses generations.

Old barbershops have always been places of transmission. “It is common for a man to take his son to the barber for the first time,”recalls the founder. A simple moment, yet rich in meaning. It is there that rituals are learned, silence is shared and a relationship with time is built. Antiga Barbearia de Bairro was born precisely from this symbolic space where care becomes legacy.

A new chapter, faithful to its origins

In May, the brand’s anniversary month, Antiga Barbearia de Bairro is preparing to launch a new fragrance. A milestone that marks a new chapter without breaking with its heritage. The concept revisits the classics of perfumery, reinterpreting them through a neo-classical, unmistakably Portuguese aesthetic.

“The classic is in fashion” is the message that accompanies this launch. A fragrance conceived as an heirloom, carrying values of authenticity, national design and production largely based in Portugal,  today one of the brand’s main distinguishing features in an increasingly globalised market.

A brand to be remembered with affection

When asked about the future, Luís Pereira answers without excess: he would like the brand to be remembered “with affection, as an authentic brand, of good quality, beautiful inside and out… and Portuguese”. Perhaps it is this clarity that explains the longevity of Antiga Barbearia de Bairro. It does not try to be everything to everyone. It prefers to remain faithful to its story.

In a time that moves ever faster, brands like this remind us that some gestures deserve to be made slowly. And that giving a fragrance, especially on Father’s Day, can be more than a gift. It can be a discreet way of continuing a story.

The products of Antiga Barbearia de Bairro are available at Mar d’Estórias, created for those who value ritual, memory and tradition – today, but above all for many years to come.
