From dream to reality, the journey is never simple. There is no straight line that fully explains it. Instead, it is built through persistence and trial and error. Unexpected moments slowly begin to take shape over time. That is how this space was born in the heart of Lagos. It sits within centuries-old walls that have heard countless voices and hold countless stories. Here, the spirit of Portugal is not explained. It is celebrated.

The idea first began to take shape through the hands of Célia Real, who for years nurtured the desire to create a space in the Algarve dedicated to everything that defines Portugal’s identity. What was still missing was someone willing to look at the project with the same belief and understand that products, gastronomy, and stories could also create places with soul. That was when Luís Ledo became part of this journey and chose to invest in a shared vision: a Portugal that deserves to be told, tasted, and brought into people’s homes.

The chosen city was Lagos, although finding the right building required time, persistence, and many kilometres on the road. In the end, it was the old fire station that brought together everything the project was looking for: location, size, and above all, a story already written into its walls. Before becoming home to Mar d’Estórias, the building had many lives over the centuries. In the 15th century, it housed the Church of Corpo Santo and the Maritime Commitment, later becoming a grain warehouse and, in the 20th century, a fire station. Then came nearly thirty years of silence, marked by abandonment, harsh weather, and the inevitable wear of time.

It was within this once-silent building that Mar d’Estórias finally found the space to be born and grow. The restoration aimed to respect the original building’s character and restore dignity to a place deeply connected to the city’s memory. Through labyrinth-like corridors, staircases, and unexpected corners, the building reopened to the public in 2016, inviting visitors to discover Portugal little by little, like walking through a house filled with small stories.

Today, Mar d’Estórias stands as a landmark in the historic centre of Lagos, not only because of the experience it offers its visitors, but also because of the responsibility it embraces, sharing the very best of what Portugal creates and produces in a region deeply shaped by tourism and the constant meeting of cultures. Across its different spaces and atmospheres, the building becomes a meeting point for Portuguese products, gastronomy, and stories, revealing to those who arrive in the Algarve a country that goes far beyond its most familiar image.

From 15 to 19 June, Mar d’Estórias celebrates its 10th anniversary with a week of festivities open to everyone who has been part of this journey. Over these days, the space will host different moments and gatherings, as part of a programme that will be announced on its social media channels, where all the initiatives will be shared, not only for this week, but also for the year ahead.

You are warmly invited to be part of this beautiful story.
